14th August: Listening from Home
From inside my home, through the main gate, the sounds of 14th August arrive from the surrounding streets. Fireworks, horns, voices and distant celebrations become part of the domestic soundscape.
The recording is not made from within the celebration, but from its edge, listening to how a public expression of freedom travels into private space.
For some, these sounds represent joy, freedom and national celebration. For others, the same sounds can feel excessive, disruptive, or even unsettling. The boundary between celebration and nuisance is therefore not fixed; it changes depending on where we are listening from.
This recording is an attempt to listen to that boundary: how does a city’s celebration sound when heard from inside the home? Why what is considered Noise becomes part of the celebrations?
