Sacred Sound in Everyday Space
On a Saturday morning at a Shell petrol station, I made a field recording inside the tuck shop where a man was reciting the Qur'an. A short while later, the shop's sound system began playing a recorded Qur'an recitation, transforming the atmosphere of the space. Though occurring at different moments, both forms of recitation highlighted how sacred sound is woven into the routines of everyday life.
In many Muslim societies, Qur'an recitation is a vital part of everyday auditory culture. Beyond the mosque, it is commonly heard in homes, shops, workplaces, and public spaces, where it accompanies daily activities and shapes the character of place. Listening to these moments reveals how acts of devotion become part of the ordinary soundscape, creating spaces of reflection within everyday urban life.
This recording forms part of my ongoing exploration of Karachi's sonic identity, documenting how attentive listening can reveal the cultural and spiritual dimensions of the city's everyday soundscape.
